Friday is again upon us, which can mean only one thing... (well for the blog anyway.) It's Friday Film Extravaganza time again!
First up we've got the new advert for WeSC and their rather spiffy new headphones. Featuring none other than Jason Lee, it's worth a look:
Next up is a video from the recent Quids for Tricks event at The Works in Leeds. Featuring footage from Ben Nordberg, Manhead, Avid, Tom Harrison and various local types. Watch out for Route One riders Avid and Manhead, ruling on home turf.
Next up is a video of the new Element Flat Bar Grind Rail. Featuring most of the Element team, this is a little showcase of just how good and sturdy this rail is. Check it out right here.
Finally we've got a video of what we expect to be a MASSIVE hit this year. Called the Gibbon Slackline, it's a revolution in outdoor fun. All you need is something to attach it to, like 2 trees or posts and away you go. Bounce, flip, grind, run, whatever, the Slackline is gonna be huge. This video feature some of the Razors Pro Inline team doing something it wasn't ever intended to do. Good on them!
2008 seems to be the year of the SupraSkytop, and if you're ready for them, we've got more for you. Strictly limited to 60 pairs nationwide, the new Supra Factory 413 Skytop is on it's way! Named after Muska's Factory 413 store in LA, these shoes come in a sweet silver/turquoise colourway and look seriously special. Unfortunately, due to supplier demands, we're unable to sell these online to begin with, they will be exclusively available in our Brighton Store for the first week, and if there's any left, (which we seriously doubt) they will then be up online. We're also still waiting for a launch date, but mid-June is the educated guess, check back here for updates.
Continue after the break to see more of the 413's, plus photos of the US launch...
More images of the 413
For those of you with an eye for something a bit special, check out this link to see how they're doing on eBay. That seems like crazy money to us, but people want these shoes and someone's definitely making some dollars out of them...
The shoes were launched week in the US and the images below are of the launch at Ubiq in Philadelphia. Have you ever seen a launch queue for a pair of shoes? Crazy guys. If this isn't the scene outside Route One Brighton on the launch, I'll be seriously p****ed.
The guy above is "lineguy" he starts every one of ubiq's ltd release lines at 4:30am. That's the kind of dedication we're looking for in Brighton, you've been told. Continue reading "Coming Soon: Supra 413 Skytops"!
I know you've all been waiting for these to drop, and now they have. Featuring some kewl team decks alongside some tidy pro series decks, (Man Mountain Series and Tiled Series) and some one off's, there's something here for everyone. Click here to be taken directly, not passing Go, to the Element page, and click the image below if you want to see a zoomed in version.
Saturday 10th May 2008. Words by Sammi-Louise Dale, Route One Brighton Store - Assistant Manager.
It was a hot sunny day in Crawley and skateboarders were out in force. Crawley's concrete skatepark played host to the first stop of the Elemental Awareness Tour, with professional skateboarders Tosh Townend and Levi Brown among others from the American and European Element Skate Teams making the trip to judge this skate jam and give out some Element skate gear to the winners. There was a strong contingent of skateboarders waiting to kick off the tour with skaters of all ages from surrounding areas, stretching down to Brighton travelling to see the Element Team and to show off to try to win some new gear for themselves. Hit the link below the slideshow to continue reading!
The competition setup was as follows. There were 3 designated obstacles, a hip, a handrail and a spine. Each obstacle had a 20 minute jam session, in which time every skater had the chance to skate that obstacle. At the end of the 20 minutes, the skaters who landed the top 4 tricks were rewarded with an Element goodie bag, containing an Element deck and other Element merchandise. The winners were judged on trick difficulty, style and creativity by some of the pro's who included Tosh and Levi. As an added bonus, anyone who took part and landed any trick, no matter how big or small, was given an Element T-Shirt.
The obstacle first up was the hip. Participants had previously been warming up on this obstacle, so were raring to go with their best tricks in their minds. The jam started at quite a quick pace with many skaters keen to land anything, so they at least got a T-Shirt for taking part. The big tricks started coming after the first few minutes, and there was barely a pause for the commentator who was making sure anyone who attempted a trick was getting praised. There were bodies and boards flying around everywhere, as everyone was trying to get their best trick landed in front of the judges who were situated in the Element tent overlooking the hip.
After the 20 minutes were up, the judges spent a few minutes deliberating over the tricks landed. In 4th place was Casey Knight with a Fakie Inward Heelflip Bigspin. 3rd place went to Jake Wisdom who landed a Nollie 360 Flip and a Nollie Backside Full Cab Flip. In 2nd was Ollie Smith who pulled a 180 Fakie 5-0 Revert on the curved box at the top of the hip. But taking 1st place was Elliott Rees-Jones who landed a Backside 360 Kickflip.
With round one over all competitors and judges were given a 10 minute interval to eye up the next obstacle, which was the handrail.
The rail jam started a little slower, with less skaters seeming to want to tackle the rail, but soon tricks were being landed left, right and centre, to a great reception from the watching audience and the judges. The older skaters seemed to dominate this section of the competition, pulling some pretty technical tricks.
The judges allowed an extra 2 minutes for this jam as there were a couple of tricks they saw people trying, and wanted to see them land, which was a nice touch. After these extra 2 minutes the judges deliberated once more over the best tricks. 4th place went to Joel Elliott with a Hurricane Grind. In 3rd was Nathan Marshall with a Frontside Tailslide to Frontside Shove. 2nd place again went to Ollie Smith who pulled a 360 Flip Lipslide. 1st place though, went to Matt Ransom who pulled both a Kickflip Frontside Bluntslide and a Frontside Bluntslide Shove Out.
Another 10 minute break was then put in place while the action moved to the 3rd and final obstacle, the spine.
The jam on the spine saw a few fresh faces enter the fray, as transition skating is considered to some a different discipline of skating. There were people lining up on the quarter pipe, ready to drop in and throw themselves (literally) over the spine, which had been stickered up to show which section was being judged. There were quite a few spills, with people sliding down the other side on a regular basis, but still some technical tricks were landed.
After the 20 minutes were done the judges made their decisions on the winning tricks, a hard feat I thought. In 4th place was Lee Jethwa who pulled a Smith Transfer. 3rd went to an Unknown Skater who landed a Beanplant Fingerflip. In 2nd was Jack Dormon who stuck a Backside Tailstall to Yankover. 1st place went to Adam Hargraves who pulled a Blunt to Kickflip Hangup Transfer.
With that, the competition was seemingly done, But the Element guys had more up their sleeves. They got skaters with the most beat up boards to line them up at the side of the park, and the owner of the board in the worst condition was given a new one.
And it wouldn't be an Element Skate Comp without the last challenge. All participants were told to gather as much rubbish from around the park as they could, and rewarded the people who collected the most with the last of the merchandise they had to offer. This fitting in nicely with Element's environmentally friendly strapline.
I managed to get a quick word with Tosh Townend after the competition was done to ask him what he thought of the whole thing. He said "It was cool to just hang out and judge the skating, and to hook kids up with free stuff!" Him and Levi both signed some Element Decks and a T-Shirt to take back as memorabilia for the Brighton Route One Shop.
With all the prizes given out, the Element team stuck around for a bit and skated the park with the skaters still there, before packing up and heading off on their trip to Paris, the next stop on the tour.
Check out this rather shaky footage we found on Youtube to see what all the fuss was about...
Welcome back to the Route One Friday Film extravaganza. Next up is a cool little interview with legendary artist SheOne. Well known for his work with Addict, which is all over our site, this will give you an insight into what it's like to be a world famous artist. Nice.
Finally we have a little vid from R1 favourite and old catalogue frontman Arto Saari. Arto's just left the Flip team, to join up with Alien Workshop, obviously we wish him the all the best, especially as he's now got a part in their upcoming Mindfield film...
If you live in, or near Brighton, you'll be well aware of the state of the The Level skatepark. In much need of repair, the Level is a park steeped in legend, that has begun to show it's age, (just a little bit). The Council have been stringing along skaters for years with the promise of a new park, but unsurprisingly have not come through with the goods. So hit up this link and sign the petition. It's time we took some action to get what's due, don't let the guys in the suits screw everyone around any longer...
If you've got your finger on the pulse, then you'll already know about this one, if you don't then why on earth not? Featuring tons (literally) of fresh new talent across multiple venues in Shoreditch, the Stag & Dagger looks like it's going to be an event to remember. One day, 15 venues, over 100 acts, but only one ticket equals great value for great entertainment in the same vein as the Camden Crawl and Rocklands in New Cross. With acts like Diplo, A Trak, SebastiAn, Black Lips and more, and one of the first ever performances of Booji Boy High, Hot Chip’s new side project lined up, alongside art shows and film screenings, there's bound to be something to suit every taste and here's the best news: Tickets are only £14!
